Cybersecurity and the Role of Trusted TOS Providers

In an era where digital transformation is reshaping the maritime industry, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical concern for port and terminal operators. The adoption of a Terminal Operating System (TOS) is a significant step towards embracing this digital revolution, but it is essential to navigate this landscape with caution and confidence. This article explores the importance of choosing a TOS provider that prioritises security, adheres to industry standards, and actively supports its customers in safeguarding their data. By partnering with a trusted provider, port and terminal operators can confidently embark on their digital transformation journey, feeling empowered and secure.

Cybersecurity, undoubtedly a growing concern, should not deter port and terminal operators from embracing digital transformation with a TOS. By choosing a solution from a provider vetted for the highest security standards, operators can confidently navigate this digital landscape, feeling encouraged and empowered.

The TOS provider should demonstrate a focus on building secure products. This would include activities such as regularly having their engineers undergo secure coding practice training and thorough testing of their code on third-party check safety. The solution should offer two-factor authentication to verify the identity of any user who accesses it. The provider should conduct regular security audits and tests against cybersecurity industry standards and provide these results to the terminal.

The TOS provider plays an active role in ensuring the safety of customer data. Whether the provider hosts the data or the terminal decides to host the TOS, the provider is committed to data security. They provide a comprehensive security guide, offering recommendations on best practices, encryption setup, protection of sensitive systems, and password management. This active support and protection should reassure the terminal operators.

Top-tier providers will have SOC2 type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications for their products and continuously monitor for malicious activities so they can take proactive measures if needed. They will also staff a team of IT security professionals and product security architects that can partner with a terminal to answer any security questions, analyse the terminal’s security audits and respond immediately if security incidents occur.

A TOS can also be integrated with Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) that monitor network and system activities for malicious activities and policy violations. If a threat is detected, the system can alert administrators and take preventive actions to mitigate potential damage.

As the maritime industry undergoes a digital transformation, port and terminal operators must prioritise cybersecurity when adopting a Terminal Operating System (TOS). By selecting a TOS provider that demonstrates a strong commitment to security, adheres to industry standards, and actively supports its customers, operators can confidently embrace the benefits of digitalisation while minimising the risks associated with cyber threats. Ultimately, partnering with a trusted TOS provider empowers port and terminal operators to navigate the digital landscape with assurance, enabling them to unlock new opportunities for growth and success in the maritime industry.
