Maritime Digitalisation: Key Recommendations for Better Decision-Making

Despite significant investment in digital systems, many organisations still struggle to translate data into effective decisions. Fragmentation and misalignment continue to limit the value of these tools. This insight outlines practical recommendations for improving decision-making through integration.

As discussed, shipowners and operators have invested heavily in digital systems to improve performance monitoring, voyage optimisation, emissions reporting, and regulatory compliance in recent years.

Data is more available, visible, and detailed than previously. However, better visibility has not always translated into better decisions. The reason is the fragmented environment in which those tools operate.

Operational decisions affect performance, compliance, and commercial exposure. Digital systems, however, are often introduced in response to specific pressures rather than as part of an overall strategy.

Most organisations operate with digitally capable platforms, but those systems are usually not designed to function as a shared decision environment.

This has led to a layering of technology systems, added to address performance, compliance, reporting, and other immediate needs at the time.

Widespread industry fragmentation is the result, not as a result of poor decision-making, but because of adaptation when required. The issue is unlikely to be located within a single system.

Rather, issues come when teams need to make decisions and cannot locate the data they need.

The next phase of maritime digitalisation will likely not be defined by adding more tools. It will be defined by how effectively organisations can connect what they already have and design those connections around real-world decisions.

Not all operational decisions within shipping companies carry equal weight or importance. In most companies, factors like speed management, routing adjustments, fuel selection, and emissions allowance strategy have a greater impact on commercial and regulatory factors.

Starting with mapping how these decisions are currently made, who contributes information, how trade-offs are assessed, where uncertainty enters, and who holds final accountability, organisations can identify where fragmentation is currently impacting outcomes.

Companies should focus on the high-impact decisions first, then continue with further integration efforts once effective integration with crucial systems has been achieved.
