Over the past decade, vessels have taken on more systems, more data, and more responsibility.
Navigation tools now sit alongside compliance, reporting, and performance platforms, all shaping how decisions are made on board vessels.
But these systems haven’t been designed as one operating environment. They’ve been added over time, often in response to new requirements, leaving crews to interpret information across multiple tools and workflows.
As a result, the role of the seafarer is changing. Crews are no longer just navigating vessels. They manage systems, prioritise alerts, and often act as the link between tools that don’t fully connect.
At the same time, the way the industry defines competence has remained largely the same. Certification proves compliance, but it does not always reflect readiness for the realities of modern operations.
This creates a growing gap between what vessels are capable of and what crews are expected to manage.
This research series explores that gap from two perspectives. First, by examining how digital navigation is reshaping bridge operations, and second, by assessing whether current training and competency models are aligned with that reality.
Together, the findings highlight where operational risk is emerging, and what needs to change to support more effective and resilient maritime operations.
