What Makes a Decision-Ready System in Maritime Operations

Not all systems are designed to support decisions when they matter most. The true value of a system lies in its ability to reduce uncertainty at critical moments. This insight explores what defines a truly decision-ready system in maritime operations.

The effectiveness of a system is not determined by how much data it contains, but by whether it helps the user act with confidence at the moment a decision is made. This means supporting decision-makers in focusing on what matters most when a decision needs to be made.

Lars Pedersen, CTO, Frontline, with responsibility for technology and data infrastructure, supported his, stating that “the higher frequency, the sooner you get to a trend or decision point. That’s a big difference, if you get something once every 24 hours versus every five seconds.”

For senior leaders, integration only matters if it leads to better commercial decisions. Technical integration on its own does not guarantee improved outcomes; it should be judged by whether it reduces uncertainty, clarifies competing priorities, and supports accountability.

There is a noteworthy difference between simply connecting systems and confirming they actually support decision-making. Many shipping companies have invested in integration projects which focus on moving data between platforms, rather than on how that information is used in practice.

These projects are often driven by IT or compliance needs rather than by a clear view of how decisions are made in practice, whereas decision-ready systems start from the opposite direction. They begin with the decision needs and work backwards to determine how information should be synthesised.

In shipping, this means reducing organisational friction by making sure that relevant information is visible in one place at the right time, without forcing teams to abandon the tools they already rely on. Integration should make decisions easier, not add another layer of process or complexity.

As regulatory and commercial pressures merge, integration across performance, compliance, and commercial systems becomes more important. Decisions made around speed, routing, and fuel choice now carry consequences for emissions and regulatory compliance.
