A Roadmap for Safer, Smarter Shipping Through Wireless Intelligence

The maritime industry’s cable-heavy systems create barriers to safety, efficiency, and digitalisation. Cable runs add time, cost, and dry-dock dependencies, while faults can create single points of failure. Moreover, data from critical spaces often never reaches the bridge or shore teams. Wireless alternatives now work reliably in steel environments. Maritime-grade mesh networks support real-time personnel awareness, automated musters, and sensor connectivity without new penetrations. In recent deployments, average muster times fell by more than 60 percent and crews gained clearer visibility during drills and incidents.

This article presents practical recommendations for shipowners, shipyards, and regulators to accelerate wireless adoption and drive the next phase of maritime digitalisation.

For Shipowners and Operators:
Start where safety gaps are obvious. Choose a vessel where the lack of real-time location management could prove risky during an incident. Assess muster efficiency, run a pilot project, and collect results to build wider support. Engage crew early and communicate that technology enhances safety rather than surveillance. Treat data as an operational asset, not paperwork. Credible safety and personnel data can lower insurance premiums and improve ESG performance.

For Shipyards:
Design and build with a wireless-first mindset. By integrating a maritime-grade mesh network during construction, yards can eliminate kilometres of signal cabling and reduce costs and timelines. Offer digital-ready vessels as a standard feature by embedding open, sensor-agnostic networks that can support any system. This enables shipowners to integrate new technologies easily and ensures future-proofed vessels.

For Regulators and Class Societies:
Establish clear standards and rules for wireless IoT systems. Develop unified guidelines covering performance requirements, cybersecurity, and compliance. Introduce optional class notations or commendations for vessels with approved wireless tracking and monitoring systems. Incentivising adoption will raise safety standards, improve transparency, and move the entire industry toward safer, more resilient operations.

Each stakeholder has a role to play in untethering ships from cables and unlocking a new standard of safety, efficiency, and insight across global fleets.
