From Risk to Resilience – Building Connected Maritime Operations

Modern shipping requires agility, data visibility, and instant crew awareness. This article describes how connected operations and wireless systems redefine safety and resilience across vessels and fleets.

A connected vessel is defined by three capabilities. These include real-time automated awareness of personnel during an incident, seamless collection of data from any sensor, and the ability to expand without costly downtime. These components come together to enable safer, smarter maritime operations.

Imagine a ship or offshore platform where crew locations are instantly known in an emergency, safety drills take minutes instead of hours, and sensors on machinery, cargo, and the environment feed live data to the right people. Muster headcounts happen automatically, engine room alarms reach the bridge instantly, and incident investigations have a complete digital record.

Automated location refers to technology that automatically monitors and reports the position of people or assets onboard, without requiring manual input. It has the ability to transform how maritime emergencies are responded to. Instead of relying on manual counts or delayed reporting, vessels equipped with these systems know instantly where every crew member is and can act without hesitation.

The results are already visible. During the EU-funded LYNCEUS project, passenger and crew localisation technology was tested in large-scale evacuation simulations. Traditional headcounts that normally stretched into long, error-prone processes were replaced with instant digital confirmation of every person onboard. Crews could direct evacuations in real time, and passengers were guided out safely without the chaos that manual methods often create.

Wearable technology for real-time location management has proven its value in detecting medical emergencies. Devices can recognise a fall or loss of consciousness and trigger an alert, allowing targeted, coordinated rescue. Maintaining a digital record of personnel movements can also support post-incident analysis, helping companies identify causes and improve safety measures for the future.
