Recommendations for successful digital transformation in maritime

In the next few articles, we will share our comprehensive recommendations to the shipping industry, aimed at empowering ship operators to navigate their digital transformation journey effectively. These recommendations will not only build on the findings from our report, The Benchmark: Measuring the Progress of Digital Transformation in Ship Operations, but also provide practical, real-world insights that can be adapted to the specific needs of any operator—whether large or small, global or regional.

Our focus will be on providing ship operators with a roadmap to successfully implement digital solutions that deliver measurable improvements in operational efficiency, safety, sustainability, and compliance. Each recommendation will address key areas of concern, including the integration of new technologies, data management strategies, cybersecurity measures, crew training, and regulatory compliance. We will also highlight emerging trends and innovations in the maritime sector, such as artificial intelligence, automation, and predictive analytics, to help businesses stay ahead in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Importantly, while the digital transformation process must be tailored to each company’s unique situation, there are common strategies and best practices that can benefit all ship operators. Our upcoming articles will explore these universal strategies in depth, providing insights into how businesses can make the most of their resources—whether they are just starting their digital journey or looking to enhance existing initiatives. From improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions to optimising crew performance and enhancing customer satisfaction, our recommendations are designed to help the industry achieve long-term success through digital innovation.

Recommendation 1- creating the right culture for digital transformation begins at the top

Every ship operator needs a digital strategy, even if that strategy is restrained in its ambition and scope. This is primarily because the digitalisation of maritime trade is both an opportunity for those willing and able to innovate and invest and a potential risk factor for those who aren’t. For operators who do not plan to digitally transform their operations in the short to medium term, the ideation process becomes one of risk management, perhaps building a defensive strategy to prepare for changes in expectations among charterers and cargo owners and capabilities among competitors. Because digital transformation is a part of risk management, it must be orchestrated at the board or C-Suite level to ensure that the strategy is built with sufficient oversight and is accompanied by the necessary changes in attitude and company culture.

Building the right culture for digital transformation is crucial, but it requires more than just high-level support; it demands engagement across the entire organisation. While leadership sets the vision, the successful implementation of digital strategies depends on the collective commitment of all stakeholders—from onshore teams to crews at sea. Encouraging openness to new technologies, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and ensuring transparent communication are key to overcoming resistance and driving real change. A culture that embraces digitalisation will not only navigate the risks but also seize the opportunities it presents for long-term growth and resilience

For further insight into the recommendation highlighted in this article as well as the other recommendations given throughout the course of the research take a look at our thought leadership report, produced in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register, The Benchmark: Measuring the Progress of Digital Transformation in Ship Operations. This report provides a deep dive into the journey towards digital maturity for maritime businesses. You can download a copy here.
