The maritime industry’s reliance on cable-first systems has long been seen as a sign of robustness. Yet as this article reveals, the approach is increasingly a liability: expensive, slow, and prone to failure, putting both safety and profitability at risk.
Traditionally, maritime connectivity has been driven by a cable-first approach. But wired systems are expensive to install, slow to adapt, and fragile in some harsh marine conditions. Every new cable run demands planning, dry-docking, and costly labour, while even a single point of failure can compromise safety-critical monitoring. Cables also simply cannot deliver the real-time location awareness or seamless data integration that modern operations demand. As vessels grow more complex and regulations become more stringent, these limitations put both people and profitability at risk.
Ships have long relied on cables to move data, but wiring every sensor is costly, intrusive, and limited in reach. Critical inputs, such as environmental data, gas detection, temperature, and crew location information, are spread across wide areas that cabling can’t cover efficiently.
As a result, managing the location of crew and other personnel that frequently move between various vessels and assets like Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs), Service Operation Vessels (SOVs), Construction SOVs (CSOVs), and offshore wind turbines is challenging. Ports and vessels are complex, each with unique layouts, systems, and procedures. Alongside the permanent crew, stevedores, contractors, and visitors are constantly moving through these spaces in irregular, often unstructured patterns. Traditional oversight struggles to track this fluid workforce, leaving safety gaps and operational blind spots.
The absence of real-time location management jeopardises safety by leaving personnel whereabouts unknown in the event of an incident. Even a small margin of error in location data can have life-threatening consequences. While crews are trained to respond to incidents, they often occur suddenly without warning, and crews either do not have time or may be physically unable to use their training.
