Avoiding Future Vendor Lock-In Through Better Data

Strong digital foundations are not only about improving today’s workflows. They are about preserving flexibility for the future. When data is accessible, structured, and portable, organisations retain the freedom to evolve systems without losing insight or control. This insight explains how structured, portable data preserves flexibility and protects long-term strategic optionality.

Strong digital foundations are not only about improving today’s workflows, but about preserving flexibility for the future. Maritime companies tend to have years of operational and commercial data, but struggle to distil it into actionable decisions because the data is dispersed, inconsistently structured, or difficult to query.

This fragmentation does not just limit insight; it can constrain future choices. When data cannot move independently of the systems that store it, organisations inherit long-term dependency whether they intend to or not.

Strong digital foundations solve this by making data usable, with consistent definitions, reliable timestamps, clear provenance, and the ability to search and analyse quickly.

Senior Director, IT and Financial Systems at a global maritime company describes this as the point where digitisation becomes a step-change rather than a marginal improvement. Badesha notes that the organisation has collected “a lot of information, over a lot of years” and that it is “invaluable, but it’s so overwhelming for people to look at that they can’t spot the trends.”

In her view, digitalisation should present this information quickly so teams can adjust operations and “do what they need to do to run the business effectively.” Badesha calls the ability to query the data quickly “a game changer.”

Shipping organisations often have vast amounts of information but lack effective insight. The challenge is not access to data, but the ability to turn it into actionable decisions without overwhelming teams.

Lars Lomholt, Business Transformation/PMO Manager at Uni-Tankers, encapsulates this, stating, “In a highly operational and lean organisation, the challenge isn’t access to data, we receive multiple market updates every day. The real challenge is turning that information into leverage without losing focus on what matters most: serving our customers.”

When the data model is consistent and reliable, the analytics and automation systems which use the data collected in day-to-day operations become meaningful.

This same coherence also reduces long-term dependency on specific vendors or tools, because data remains accessible, portable, and usable as systems evolve.

In practice, this is what optionality looks like: the freedom to change tools, partners, or processes without losing visibility, control, or historical understanding.
