S-100 marks a new era in navigation, accommodating a wider range of hydrographic digital data sources, products, and users. This includes the integration of imagery, gridded datasets, enhanced metadata standards, flexible encoding options, and a more adaptable maintenance process. These features offer numerous opportunities for improved situational awareness and more data-driven decision making.
This article explores how S-100 will help to overcome some of the navigational challenges outlined previously. The areas discussed below are a snapshot of some of the benefits that S-100 is expected to deliver.
Increased interoperability and global standardisation
S-100 is based on the globally recognised ISO 19100 series of standards, enabling interoperability across different geospatial systems. This allows systems compliant with S-100 to incorporate official data from hydrographic offices, though they can also integrate additional data sources, offering more flexibility than many of today’s systems.
Data from different platforms and systems, such as ECDIS, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and real-time monitoring tools will all be interoperable, providing greater visibility of the marine environment for safer and more efficient decision making.
This means that vessel positioning data and related navigational products are consistent across different regions and providers. This reduces the risk of data being used for different products from different sources. Ultimately, this provides greater assurance to ECDIS manufacturers that the data the systems are using is accurate and reliable.
Increasing information in ENC data
By integrating S-102 and S-104 datasets with an S-101 ENC, mariners are provided with a significantly enhanced view of the physical environment. This combination enables dynamic adjustments of the vessel’s safety contour, improving awareness of navigable waters in real time.
More efficient data exchange
S-100 enabled products will exchange data more efficiently than S-57. These products will be able to handle large data sets and transfer this data between systems relatively quickly for more efficient analysis and decision making.
Real-time data streaming
There is a potential for real-time data streaming into S-100 enabled ECDIS products as connectivity, data supply and developments allow. This means that continuous dynamic updates of information on the marine environment, such as contours or depth, will be available, improving the safety of ship operations.
3D and 4D data integration
S-100 supports 3D and 4D data, enabling more accurate representation of underwater features and environmental conditions, such as tides and currents.
Enhanced cybersecurity
Standardised data formats make it easier to apply uniform security measures, such as encryption and authentication, across multiple systems. This mitigates the risk of cyber breaches that are the result of inconsistent or incompatible security protocols.
Official data provided by hydrographic offices
Hydrographic offices are responsible for ensuring that S-100 data is regularly updated to reflect changing conditions, such as new hazards, shifting sandbanks, or updated port information. This will ensure mariners have access to the most up-to-date and accurate information, which is critical for safe navigation. Data from hydrographic offices is also standardised to ensure interoperability.
Reduced alarm fatigue
Limited feature objects in ENCs data previously meant that they had to be encoded into features like caution areas or obstruction areas. This could trigger unnecessary alarms or alerts. Not all the information contained in these features should have raised warnings for mariners. With the introduction of new information objects in S-101, hydrographic offices can now encode this data without causing alarms during route checks or monitoring. This data model reduces the number of alerts and makes the system more user-friendly by structuring data more efficiently to prevent unnecessary distractions for mariners.
