Recommendations for successful digital transformation in maritime

Every business is different and our report, The Benchmark: Measuring the Progress of Digital Transformation in Ship Operations, intends to highlight one thing in particular, it is that the most critical part of any digital transformation is the customised ideation process. Identifying individual use cases and building solutions that account for the budget, resources, and expertise available to the business is vital and serves as a reminder that one size does not fit all.

In our previous article in this series of twelve we addressed the importance of creating the right culture for digital transformation begins at the top. This article sets out some further common recommendations which could be considered by any ship operator, regardless of individual circumstances. Here we explore recommendations two and three, with there being four in total.

2. Effective digital transformation requires dedicated resources

While maritime understanding and awareness of digital technologies have grown extensively in recent years, finding, selecting, and applying the right digital tools is a highly specialised area of expertise. Investing early into staff with digital skills and a focused remit is a transformative approach. All of the most developed and digitally mature operators employ a dedicated leader such as a Chief Digital Officer (CDO), Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), Digitalisation Lead, Head of Innovation, etc. If a company already has an IT department, the scope of duties will overlap to some degree, but it is likely that a generalist IT team won’t have sufficient time or resources to tackle the change management which accompanies digital innovation. A focused leader will be much better equipped to handle complexity and ensure that the business is investing wisely. Job title isn’t important, but sufficient access to strategy, performance, and risk management is.

3. Embrace experimentation and pilot programs

Early adoption of new technologies requires a higher tolerance to risk. Many potentially transformative technologies are still unproven and will remain so unless ship operators are willing to partner with innovators to test and validate hypothesis-driven outcomes. The benefits of this approach are manifold. Digitalisation in particular makes it possible to run several small-scale, cost effective experiments, and learning from them can be of great value, even if a particular technology ultimately fails to reach full commercialisation.

Successful digital transformation in the maritime industry requires a multifaceted approach that combines strategic investment in resources with a culture of experimentation and innovation. Ultimately, ship operators who adopt a forward-thinking mindset, investing in digital leadership and fostering a culture of innovation, will be better positioned to navigate the complexities of the digital age. By dedicating the right resources and embracing a measured approach to experimentation, they can unlock new efficiencies, improve competitiveness, and future-proof their operations in a rapidly evolving industry. The journey may involve risks and challenges, but those who commit to it will be well-placed to lead the maritime sector into the digital future.

For further insight into the recommendations highlighted in this article as well as the other recommendations drawn out throughout the course of the research take a look at our thought leadership report, produced in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register, The Benchmark: Measuring the Progress of Digital Transformation in Ship Operations. This report provides a deep dive into the journey towards digital maturity for maritime businesses. You can download a copy here.
