Maritime Digitalisation and Why Decision-Making Still Falls Short

Over the past decade, digital tools have become standard across maritime operations, yet their impact on decision-making has been uneven. While systems for performance, compliance, and optimisation are widely adopted, their combined value is not always fully realised. This piece examines why increased digitalisation has not consistently translated into stronger commercial outcomes.

Maritime companies have invested heavily in digital systems over the past 10-15 years, with performance monitoring, voyage optimisation, emissions reporting, and compliance platforms now common across fleets of varying sizes and operating models.

It is fair to suggest that the industry has not failed to digitalise, with steady progress often in response to specific operational or regulatory pressures like decarbonisation targets, reporting obligations, and fuel cost volatility. Despite the advancements made, the broader availability of digital tools has not always led to improved decision-making at the commercial level.

As regulatory and commercial pressures grow, operational decisions are becoming more connected with broader financial consequences. For example, a routing change can affect fuel consumption, emissions exposure, and schedule reliability while also influencing charter party performance and cost exposure under regional regulation.

Decisions which were once treated as technical optimisations now carry financial and commercial consequences that extend beyond a single voyage or department. The volume of data available has also increased, with teams rarely operating without information dashboards, performance indicators, and automated reports.

Data is often scattered across systems, having to be interpreted by different departments and accessed when required rather than continuously used to contribute towards commercial objectives. Most organisations operate with good digital systems, but these systems were often introduced to solve specific issues rather than to function as part of a decision ecosystem designed around how real-world issues are resolved.

This has led to stacked and layered processes, with overlapping datasets and fragmented systems which do not always communicate effectively with one another. The issue is turning this abundance of available data into clear decisions at the moment choices need to be made.

A vessel’s underperformance would usually be handled as a standard charter party issue. In one recent case, it became something else.

Jeet Banerjee, a sustainability and emissions data specialist with experience across auditing and ship management, described how a routine performance claim expanded into a question of emissions liability. Under the charter party agreement, the owner had agreed to absorb performance-related claims for the first two weeks.
