Shipping in a Low-Trust, High-Complexity Environment

Shipping now operates in a highly scrutinised environment where incomplete or poorly structured data can carry significant consequences. As regulatory demands and stakeholder expectations increase, digital foundations that once seemed sufficient are no longer fit for purpose. In this insight, we examine how volatility, regulatory pressure, and rising stakeholder expectations are increasing the consequences of poor data foundations.

Global shipping is increasingly shaped by volatility rather than stability. Geopolitical disruption, sanctions, climate-related regulation, evolving trade patterns, and heightened scrutiny from customers and regulators all place pressure on operators to make quick decisions.

As maritime companies develop their digital offerings, a pattern is emerging. There is a focus on the result and what they want to deliver rather than laying the groundwork required to support new technologies.

Kris Vedat, CEO of SmartSea, with 25 years’ experience as a maritime and shipping executive, described how this is creating an environment where the expectations around what digitalisation can solve is unrealistic. “Digitalisation is not a silver bullet. The challenge is that people go for the shiny elements like AI or new connectivity because of the hype, but they forget about the prerequisites. Without the foundations in place, you can’t really adapt and adopt the technology properly,” he said.

This is an important consideration given the current low-trust maritime landscape. If decisions are made using incomplete or poorly structured data, the consequences can be difficult to undo.

At the same time, trust throughout the maritime supply chain is increasingly fragile. This is reflected in the number of contractual disputes related to vessel performance, and in the growing expectations of customers for clear visibility and explanations when delays occur.

This means that decisions based on incomplete or unreliable information carry higher consequences than they did in the past. This shift is reinforced by the growing expectations from charterers, insurers, and cargo owners for transparency in terms of vessel operations and explanations for underperformance.

In complex logistics environments, local efficiency matters less than end-to-end coordination and visibility across a supply chain. This shift is increasingly shaping how performance is measured and how accountability is assigned.

As trust across the maritime supply chain comes under pressure, operators are considering what efficiency means in daily operations. The focus is shifting away from optimising individual parts of the system and toward how the whole journey works.

Senior Commercial Executive within the maritime sector summarised this clearly, stating that “what’s being optimised is not the port operation itself, but how cargo moves from point A to point B as efficiently as possible.”
