Even when a future-ready setup is clearly defined, poor execution can undermine progress. Successful digital transformation in shipping depends on careful rollout, stakeholder alignment, phased implementation, and sustained attention to governance. This insight examines phased implementation, stakeholder alignment, and governance as keys to successful transformation.

Even when the future setup is clear, poor execution standards will undermine progress, especially as shipping companies operate in high-risk environments where disruption has real-world consequences.

The successful rollout of digital platforms often begins with targeted improvements which aim to address visible problem areas. These early wins help build credibility and trust, particularly among operational teams who are sceptical of projects that promise long-term benefits without short-term success.

One of the most effective ways of reducing risk during the implementation stage is to use a phased approach to change, rather than modernising all systems at once. This ensures that organisations focus on building stable foundations before adding complexity.

The first step is to improve levels of visibility and consistency within current workflows to stabilise workflows. This can include reducing reliance on email for coordination, determining where information should be stored, and ensuring key operational points are captured.

Once there is stability, organisations can transition into a connection phase where systems linked and data is reused rather than re-entered. It is in this stage where the process of greater sharing across chartering, operations, and post-voyage analysis begins.

Once these foundations are stable, optimisation becomes a realistic goal. Advanced analytics, automation, and AI require consistent and reliable data. Introducing advanced capabilities too soon risks more errors, rather than reducing them.

“If a system is difficult to use, people won’t adopt it, even if it looks good on paper. Teams are lean, and they don’t have time for complex workflows. Simplicity really matters,” stressed Erkut Denizci.

“Most initiatives fail because of a lack of change management. You need business buy-in, and you need the end users, especially crew, involved early so they become champions rather than resistors,” explained Kris Vedat.

Without the early involvement of those using the systems from the start, even well-designed systems can struggle to gain trust and traction in real-world operations.

Across the maritime industry, data transformation programmes fail for consistent reasons. Organisations focus too much on single functions, buy new technology without a clear plan for how it will be used, or underestimate the time and resources required to support users through changes.

Companies which experience the most success when implementing new tools continuously look for improvements. They do so through establishing clear governance, defining ownership, and regularly reviewing systems and data flows.

In the long-term, it becomes easier to onboard staff, disagreements are easier to resolve, and lessons are learned from past incidents.

Importantly, the process of establishing strong digital foundations is one which requires ongoing attention as operations evolve and regulations change.
